Markets Update:
U.S. stocks ended mixed on Tuesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average rallying as upbeat corporate earnings and falling oil prices helped offset concerns about artificial intelligence-related stocks.
The Dow climbed 529.85 points, or 1.02%, to close at 52,495.88. The S&P 500 advanced 0.28% to 7,712.57, while the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.02% to 26,424.82.
Industrial products manufacturer 3M surged more than 5% after reporting better-than-expected quarterly earnings and raising its full-year guidance. Aerospace and defense company Northrop Grumman gained more than 4% following an earnings beat.
Oil prices retreated, supporting investor sentiment. West Texas Intermediate crude futures fell 1.8% to settle at $101.79 a barrel, while Brent crude declined 0.7% to $108.79. Treasury yields also moved lower as traders monitored developments in the Middle East.
Meanwhile, concerns about AI-related spending and borrowing continued to pressure technology stocks. South Korean AI firm Elice plunged more than 30% during its public market debut, weighing on sentiment across the sector.
However, some AI-linked shares recovered during the session. Western Digital rose more than 3%, Seagate Technology gained over 2%, and CoreWeave and Marvell Technology advanced more than 1% each.
Investors are now looking ahead to upcoming earnings from major technology companies. Executives’ comments on returns from AI investments, data center spending and 2027 capital expenditure plans could determine whether the recent market rebound continues.
