US Stocks Rally Ahead of Key Earnings – Nasdaq Jumps 1.05%
US equity markets pushed higher in trading yesterday as investors positioned themselves ahead of key earnings updates from Tesla and Meta. The Nasdaq led the gains, jumping 1.05% to close at 26,702, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 0.69% to finish at 52,856. The S&P 500 also recorded a solid session, gaining 0.58% to close at 7,757. Technology stocks returned to favour ahead of the earnings announcements, with both Tesla and Meta reporting after the closing bell. Tesla beat market estimates, while Meta confirmed plans to increase spending on artificial intelligence, keeping the tech sector firmly in focus for investors in the coming sessions.
US Treasury yields edged higher across the curve as traders continued to assess the outlook for Federal Reserve monetary policy following last week’s stronger-than-expected inflation numbers. The policy-sensitive 2-year Treasury yield rose 3.0 basis points to close at 4.806%, while the benchmark 10-year yield climbed 1.1 basis points to finish at 5.119%. The US dollar was relatively quiet despite the move higher in yields, with the Dollar Index slipping just 0.03% to close at 101.69. The greenback continues to consolidate within recent ranges as traders weigh the prospect of further Fed rate hikes against ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.
Oil markets experienced a rare quieter trading session following the extreme volatility seen earlier in the week. Brent crude edged 0.90% higher to close at $109.77 a barrel, while WTI slipped 0.68% to finish at $97.15. Investors remain heavily focused on developments in the Middle East, particularly the prospect of a potential peace agreement between the US and Iran.
Gold managed to recover further ground from recent support levels, advancing 0.39% to close at $4,140.38 an ounce. The precious metal pushed higher despite the modest increase in US Treasury yields, although price action remained relatively subdued compared with the volatility seen in recent sessions.
Dollar Set for a Breakout in the Coming Days
The US dollar has been trading in relatively tight ranges against the major currencies in recent sessions, but traders are increasingly anticipating a breakout as two major factors threaten to drive the greenback out of its current holding pattern. Developments in the Middle East and expectations for a potential Federal Reserve rate hike in December are likely to be the key drivers of the next significant move.
On the downside, a successful peace agreement between the US and Iran could see the dollar come under significant selling pressure as investors unwind safe-haven positions built up during the conflict and inflation concerns ease.
However, the upside risks remain substantial. Should the current peace process fail again, as we have seen several times before, and hostilities escalate across the Middle East, renewed safe-haven demand could quickly push the dollar back towards recent annual highs.
With a hold from the Fed next week all but locked in, the prospect of another 25-basis-point Fed rate hike in December adds another layer of support for the greenback. Stronger US economic data, as we saw last week, and persistent inflation could see markets increase their expectations for further tightening into 2027, lifting Treasury yields and providing fresh momentum for dollar bulls.
Given the current volatility in the markets, FX traders feel that they have had a bit of respite over recent days and that the next move could push the greenback hard, either one way or the other.
Geopolitics and Sentiment to Dominate Quiet Calendar Trading Day
Looking ahead, the macroeconomic calendar is relatively quiet today, leaving geopolitical developments and corporate earnings firmly in focus. The Asian session features New Zealand CPI data (exp. +0.8% q/q) early in the day, while the US session will see the release of Weekly Unemployment Claims (exp. 200k). Neither release is expected to overshadow developments in the Middle East, where the prospect of a potential US-Iran peace agreement remains the major focus for global markets.
Traders will also be monitoring the reaction to the latest Tesla and Meta earnings reports, with technology stocks likely to remain active as investors assess the outlook for the sector. With geopolitical uncertainty still elevated and oil prices particularly sensitive to fresh developments, markets could see another volatile trading day despite the relatively light economic calendar.
